Mikela dejará atrás súbitamente su infancia en el caserío en el momento en el que su madre viuda la lleva a la casa de los Repáraz, una familia acomodada de Alsasua, a cuyo servicio entrará la niña, de apenas trece años. Así lo han hecho antes sus hermanas mayores, y ahora le toca a ella aligerar la mesa de la casa por turno y, de paso, ejercitarse en un oficio que quizá le sea de utilidad más adelante.
Aún vivo el rescoldo de la guerra civil, en casa de los Repáraz Mikela conocerá la vida de la gente pudiente, pero también el reverso de la moneda, porque corren malos tiempos para los perdedores…
Deberá dominar la nostalgia de su familia, embridar los recuerdos y, al mismo tiempo, abrir su corazón adolescente a la nueva vida que comienza a mostrársele.
Aprenderá en su propia carne que es inútil esforzarse por permanecer al resguardo de todos los vientos; en cualquier momento, por cualquier resquicio, se colará una ráfaga imprevista que la transportará o lo desconocido. Solo quien permanece alerta podrá zafarse del vendaval.
