Synopsis

A man who left his village when he was young returns to see his father on his death bed, triggering a wave of memories, with undercurrents of silent rancour and rejection. After finding a longed-for job in an international institution in Geneva, another protagonist finds himself following the footsteps of the previous tenant of the apartment he has rented, and curiosity turns to obsession. At the age of eighty, Mila is going to to sell her holiday home on the Mediterranean, ignoring her children’s opinions, and on the way she finds experiences and feelings of all kinds.

The short stories in this first collection by Itziar Otegi are observant and sensitive, winning the Kutxa Fundazioa Donostia literary award. The author tells us of lost dreams and disappointments, of the feeling of not being from anywhere, of unattainable beauty, of the fleeting connections we make with others, of the inexorable passage of time… All in a perfect narrative, a rich, precise language and a style that is as subtle as it is delicate.
