Mundu zitalaren kontra

Synopsis

A news stand on the promenade in Benidorm, once filled with newspapers and customers, has now become a symbol of abandonment and decadence. And two women who work in it, in morning and afternoon shifts: Pilar, daughter of the fisherman who opened the news stand in the mid-20th century, who lives with her invalid sister; and a nameless young woman from the faraway Basque Country who has come for a summer job there, perhaps fleeing from her inner turmoil.
In telling us about two parallel solitudes, the author gives us an incisive portrait of today’s society: fuzzy identities, unclear relationships, a rudderless life without goals or hope… Lizar Begoña displays a vision and a style of her own in her first novel, written thanks to the Igartza prize.

Publisher

Elkar publishing house was founded in 1975, with the aim of promoting Basque culture. Since then it has been very active as both a publisher and a record label, promoting the literary and musical works of writers and musi- cians and, at the same time, helping to fill gaps in and fulfil the needs of our culture. Thanks to the work carried out in these years, Elkar’s catalogue cur- rently holds more than 2,500 works.
